1. I cannot mix metals in a space
Mixing metals is one of my go to in Interior Design especially in a kitchen or bathroom.
I choose a primary and an accent, the primary being the one I use in majority of the area and the accent one in the remaining…I like to do 70-30 which always gives the best results.
Whenever mixing 2 or more different things, try to make it look intentional and for that distribute the finishes all over the space instead of concentrating on a single area and mix up the finishes too.
Stick to your style and I personally mix 2 metals at a time, at most 3 if it’s a bigger space.
2. I cannot mix patterns
Just like mixing metals, you can mix patterns too in a room. It adds a visual interest to a space and when done properly, looks much intentional and put together.
Just by keeping in mind few things like the color palette, the basic mood of the room, which patterns go well together and the scale of the patterns you can take your room from drab to fab in no time.
3. Small spaces always have to be boring
On the contrary there are so many things that can be done in a small space. You can go with a bold design choice if that is your style. Choose a beautiful paint color and paint the whole room with it even the ceiling ( yes don’t forget the ceiling, it creates all that drama), here I did a home office where I wallpapered the ceiling.
Pickup your favorite wallpaper which by the way have made a huge comeback and create some depth with patterns and colors, furnishings, artworks, furniture pieces and so on.
Just keep in mind the scale and proportions and the functionality of the space.
4. I don’t want any other light source other than given by the builder
No room is complete without light fixtures. In any interior they can make or break a space. So whenever thinking of lighting , think of ambient, accent and task lights. When all these 3 come together, the room looks more put together. Different layers of lights, keeping the fixtures on dimmers and choosing the correct temperature are some of the ways you can add that designer touch to your home.
5. Pink is only for kid’s rooms
It’s a common thing I’ve heard so many times that pink is only for a little girl’s room.
Actually pink can be used anywhere ( of course only if you like it ) irrespective of the room. Even my bedroom has some pink accents this spring. Just keep in mind few things when using pink in a matured space like choosing a little muted shade, pair it with metal and wood accents and I always like to add black and brown touches too. Create a contrast with some rustic elements and you are good to go.
6. Interior Designers cannot work within my budget
Interior designers can work within any reasonable budget. They have that expertise and experience that is really helpful in any Design project. And moreover they have access to so many Design centers. Another thing when you’re hiring a designer, chances of errors become very less and you don’t have to end up redoing and spending more money in the process.
7. Interior Designers would not respect my style
Interior Designers always respect your style and needs. It’s your house, so we always like to keep your personality and functionality in mind while designing a space.
That is why before starting any project, I always like to sit with my clients to know about them, how they’re going to use a space, what they like and don’t like and so on. Sometimes clients have a special piece of furniture or other heirlooms that they are not willing to part with, we try to include it in the new design that looks cohesive with the rest of the décor.
8. I don’t need a plan before any project
We always need a plan before any project big or small. In fact planning is the most important step to a beautiful home. We need spatial planning, lighting planning, furniture placements and last but not the least budget and timeline. Without all these, you would end up spending thousands of dollars and chances are you won’t even like the space after a few days.
