Imagine a beautiful room with great architectural details, bespoke lighting and furniture, expensive home décor but without any artwork… it’s hard to imagine, right!! Until and unless you’re deliberately going for that look.
Choosing any artwork is easy but choosing the perfect one for your perfect space requires a little bit of what I call “research”
In my design career I’ve seen that choosing an artwork is one of the trickiest. So here are my 4 factors to consider before choosing any artwork.
1.Overall style of the space – Before just clicking the “Order Now” button, think of your design style. A piece of artwork no matter how beautiful it looks in a bohemian space may not work in a nautical inspired room. Since any artwork big or small has an important impact on the overall design, choosing it wisely really gives the room a cohesive look.
2.Color palette – An artwork plays an important role in tying the whole room together so picking something that has the same color palette as the rest of the room creates a harmonious room.
3.Size of the artwork – Another important factor to consider is the size of the artwork. It should be in scale and in proportion to the space it is being hung. Too big or too small will only ruin the rooms aesthetic. If you want to know more on the perfect size click here
]4.Price / Uniqueness – Price and uniqueness are the other two factors to consider while choosing an artwork. If you really like something bespoke for your space it comes with a hefty price tag and sometimes it can cost more than anything in the space. So here are my 5 tips to keep in mind while selecting an artwork
i) Own photos – You or your spouse may be really good at taking photos and there are lots of them from your vacations. Pick your favorite one, print it, frame it and you’ll get your own unique artwork. Easiest, cheapest and most importantly a piece of memory is always in front of you.
ii) Own paintings – If you can paint, even a little scribble, go for it. Trust me, anything looks good when framed and if abstract paintings are your style, it is even easier; just a few paints, a brush and a canvas is all you need.
iii) Local artists – there are so many local artists whose amazing work is yet to be discovered by the world. By choosing their artwork or paintings you’re not only supporting local business and budding talents, it is something to be proud of.
iv) Antique shops / Flea market / Thrift stores – if you like vintage oil painting in pretty gilded frames, these are the perfect places to consider. I agree sometimes they can be expensive but these are worth it since you’re bringing history home with you and your guests will really appreciate your design aesthetics.
v) Prints – if you’re not particularly particular about the uniqueness of your artwork, consider downloadable prints the easiest and cheapest way of getting an artwork in my opinion. Then there are big box retailers where you can get the perfect one just for you.
