Focal Point – When you enter a room, what is the first thing / space that catches your eyes; that is the focal point. It can be a statement piece of furniture, wall art, light fixture or a particular wall itself. Generally the main conversational area is arranged around the focal point.
Timeless / Neutral Furniture – The bigger furniture pieces like a sofa or dining table or a bed should be timeless and according to your style / aesthetic. It might happen that yellow sofa is in trend but I would suggest to avoid spending thousands of dollars on it only to find it going out of trend within a couple of years later and you’re stuck with a blob of yellow in your living room until and unless yellow sofa is your style, then there is no harm in it.
While choosing furniture pieces, I suggest go with your style rather than with trends, and with timeless pieces because these will never go out of style. Last but not the least, go with neutral colors like black, white gray and beige.
Layers of Lighting – Light is undoubtedly one of the most important elements of designing a space. These are not only functional but they help tying the whole room and decor together. There can be different types of lighting according to the function, like ambient, task and accent. The most important thing is there should be different layers of lighting like recessed, chandelier or pendant, floor lamp, table lamp. picture lights, scones. Other important things to remember are the temperature of the lighting and the need for a dimmer. So the bottom line is to use lights not only for its functional properties but also for its aesthetic values.
Rugs – Another very important must in any space from entryway to bedroom to kitchen is a rug. A rug helps the space and furniture pieces toe together and not float. Things to remember before buying a rug are : where you’re going to put it, because that will decide the pile and pattern, the size of the rug. Rule of thumb is, it should be big enough so that all the furniture legs can be on it, if not, at least the front legs. In a dining room it should be big enough so that when the chairs are pulled back all the legs are still on the rug. There is nothing that breaks a room like a one with a teeny tiny rug. Choose the pattern and color according to the rest of your design.
Window treatment – Lets admit we can not do without window treatment. These are essential for privacy, to block the sun, for aesthetic value and definitely to make any space look more put together. Imagine a room with beautiful architectural details, gorgeous furniture and rugs but no window treatments until and unless you’re going for a minimal contemporary bare window look (now that’s awesome too).Something puts the whole room off, right !! Keeping some simple things in mind like from where to hang the curtains, the volume of the curtains. Choose the window treatment depending upon the style of the rest of the room like roller shades, curtains with pleats (pinch pleat, box pleat, grommet pleat etc.) Above all, consider your window treatment as another aspect of your decor.
Artwork / Mirror / Wall Hangings – Artwork or mirrors or any wall hangings are very important part of any design. These reflect the homeowners style perfectly. When choosing any artwork, keeping some simple things in mind makes the whole process easier, like the size of the artwork, the height from where it is hanging above the furniture, the style, the frame among other things. If you’re doing a mirror the main thing to consider is what its reflecting. It is desirable to hang a mirror so that it reflects a nice view or a chandelier or another great piece of art and so on.
Good Bedding – Just the thought of a plush nice bed at night is so relaxing after a long day at work and for that we need good bedding. Nice pillows, a duvet, cushions, throw blankets not only make a bed a lot nicer, it also creates that cozy and relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom. For me the best are linen bedspread and duvet cover. I love the natural look and feel of the material. Other great option for the bedding are 100% Egyptian cotton, silk and wool. Other things to keep in mind are thread count and weave. Higher the thread count the softer the bedding will be.
Front Door – They say the first impression is the last one, and the first thing that we see in a house is the front door. When choosing the front door, few things to keep in mind are:
- The overall architecture of the house
- The material of the door (wood, steel, fiberglass etc.)
- Color of the door
- Style of the door
Architectural details – Starting from different kind of ceilings to moldings, beams, paneling, staircase, doors and windows everything fall under this category. Incorporating at least one architectural feature in the design elevates the whole space. This is a huge topic on its own, so I’ll cover it in another post very soon. Stay tuned!!
Greenery – Everybody loves nature, so bringing a little nature inside gives a fresh and nice mood to a space. It uplifts the moods of people. There are so many indoor plants to choose from, like fiddle leaf tree, olive tree, snake plant, pothos, monstera and so on. So depending upon the style of the room there are lots to choose from. Put it in a corner, on a table top or mantle. These looks gorgeous everywhere. Thinking you don’t have the green thumb (well I too don’t have), there are so many faux plants as well, and they looks just as nice as the real ones. So green thumb or not everybody can have greenery in their home.
