How to transition from Christmas to winter decor

Happy holidays and happy almost 2022!!

Most of the time we think winter decor = Christmas decor, so after Christmas things can become a little confusing as to how to style your home now. Neutral design styles that already use different textures like woods and metals, transitioning between seasons is easier but for those styles that depend a lot on seasonal elements, there are few things to consider.

If you’re thinking that the most wonderful time of the year is over, think twice (no I’m not saying about keeping your holiday décor for another month, though you can if you want, after all it is your home). We can make our homes look equally beautiful even after the holiday season. All you need is some direction and tips and little bit of your time.

Most of the times I get my inspirations from nature. Go to a nearby park or trail and see what is still there for us and take the cue from it.

Things to take down after Christmas –

  1. Christmas Tree
  2. Anything Christmassy like Santa Clause, Nutcrackers, Angels, Stars, Bells
  3. If red is not your regular décor color, take down anything that is red but if you want it for valentines day, a red throw or pillow won’t hurt but those red berries must to the storage.
  4. Christmas wreath
  5. Any signs that says like HO HO HO or MERRY CHRISTMAS. Same thing applies to Christmas arts
  6. Some patterns like Santa clause, gifts etc. So if you have a throw or pillow cover having these patterns, it is time to take them down.

Those were the things to take down but now you need to put up some things to fill up the empty spaces that you just created.

1. While Christmas tree is put away, you can put some wintery branches like Pine, Spruce and even Eucalyptus. Get some fresh flowers (flowers are never out of style) and put them in a beautiful vase and keep them on the coffee table, you won’t even miss the tabletop Christmas tree anymore.

2. On one hand when Santa clause and nutcrackers are back in the storage I like to keep some neutral things like these  which doesn’t speak that much Christmassy and can be kept year around. I just removed the bells from the horseshoe. So if you feel there is something from your Christmas décor that can be kept all year around, just keep it.

3. Putting away red and other Christmassy patterns does not mean it has to be boring. Bring in lots of textures through knitted throws, pillows, woods and warm metals and don’t forget to layer up. Lots of layers bring that coziness we need in the cold gloomy weather. For some reason I love plaids during winter season, looks so cozy and perfect.

4. In place of Christmas wreaths you can put up some all season wreaths and how pretty this yarn wreath looks. All you need is a wreath form, you can always reuse, some yarn and voila !

5. In place of the Christmassy prints and signs you can keep something wintery like these. Downloaded  and printed, as simple as that. You can print some of your family photos from Christmas, frame them and put them on the mantle which would surely brighten up any gloomy day.

Happy New Year !!
